The ellipse, which is a fusion of a circle and a rectangle, and the aspect ratio of the case (1:1.6181) are the "golden ratio" said to have been discovered by a Greek mathematician, and these are the basis for the name. The dial is a sunburst blue dial, a classic combination that is reminiscent of the Golden Ellipse. There is a σ (sigma) mark on either side of SWISS at the 6 o'clock position on the dial. This is a designation seen on watches made by manufacturers that belonged to an organization called APRIOR from around 1973 to around 2000, and indicates that precious metals such as gold were used for the dial and indexes. It was added with the purpose of "indicating that it is a high-quality gold Swiss-made watch." This feature is found in watches from five companies: Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, IWC, and Omega, but not all watches from the relevant period include it.
